Always choose the adventure

“Never get too busy making a living that you forget to make a life!” – Pieter “Beardman” Joubert

It has occurred to me that people these days have just become too busy being busy and ultimately end up missing out on living and enjoying life. Always an excuse as to why they don’t have ‘time’ for the gym, time to cook healthy meals or time to invest in their health; no time even to do the things they want. These are the people however who don’t miss a tv show and can tell you the entire directory of what’s going on in each show. They are the people who are always on social media following the latest trends, happenings and the intricacies of other people’s lives, never taking charge of their own lives.

As I begin getting more in touch with what it is that I want to do and the direction I want my life to move in, I am realising more and more that there is more to life than showing up for a 9-5, just a number on a time card, depleting my life to work on somebody else’s dream. I realise there is something better out there for me.

Yes, I may not possess much in the way of worldly things that people consider to be signs of being successful but I have something even better, a fulfillment that comes from doing what I love, having been to and seen some amazing places, things I have done, people I have met and been able to help along the way. Horace Mann once said that we should be ashamed to die until we have won some victory for humanity.

I enjoy going where there is no path or departing a set trail, deciding to accept the challenge by diving in head first and then figuring it all out as I go. Now this mindset is obviously not for everyone. Not every opportunity that comes along is for you either and it won’t always be easy to make a decision on what to do. It will probably sometimes be scary, it will also be lonely at times too… but in the end it will all make sense!

This is not just travel I’m talking about here. I like to be on the go and I like to be doing things. The thought of the unknown appeals to me, but I get that it’s not for everybody and some may prefer a more stable life.

Choosing the adventure could be taking the leap and falling in love? Heck, that’s scary opening yourself up and letting someone into your heart not knowing if it will be broken and leaving you to pick up the pieces and having to start again.

Taking a new job, possibly having worked there a time, leaving everything you have worked for and known to start somewhere new is scary but it could be the best decision of your life.

Notice a trend here?

FEAR. Fear holds people back; fear of things not working out, fear of what if it does and they can’t handle it. People on their death beds regret things like not spending more time with family and friends, not exploring more, not taking more trips and vacations. Not living their dreams and wasting time that they will never be able to get back, that which no amount of money could ever buy back. Never get too busy making a living that you forget to make a life!

Face your fears, live the life you are meant to… with no regrets… no ‘what ifs’! Enjoy the simple things in life and when doing something, do it with your whole heart. Live, laugh, love, jump, explore… go where it takes you and say yes to the adventure. Make a difference everywhere you go and don’t miss out on your own life, you only have one!
